Interesting, how did the granulation become visible with a regular telescope?

What do you mean? You can actually see granulation in visible light! I remember as a kid, I loved observing that "rice porridge" on the surface through my Newton-Mizar telescope! Using a diaphragm and a black filter on the eyepiece!
